Reinstalling a new retainer into a damaged hole produces exactly the same failure — the retainer has nothing solid to anchor to. Damaged receptacles need to be assessed and repaired before reinstalling trim panels.
  • Over-aggressive removal. Interior trim panels are attached with multiple retainers across their surface. Attempting to pull a corner loose before all retainers are released puts lateral load on adjacent retainers, which either breaks the retainer or cracks the panel around the mounting point.   • Reusing broken or fatigued retainers. It’s tempting to reinstall retainers that “look okay” after removal. A retainer that’s been removed and reinstalled multiple times has reduced retention force — the legs have fatigued and don’t spring back to their original tension.
